canção da estrada aberta / song of the open road
1.
A pé e de coração leve eu pego a estrada aberta,
Cheio de saúde, livre, o mundo diante de mim,
O longo caminho de terra diante de mim
levando-me a qualquer lugar aonde eu queira ir.
Forte e alegre eu ganho a estrada aberta.
A terra, isto me basta,
(No entanto, carrego comigo meus antigos e deliciosos fardos,
1.
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.
Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,
Strong and content I travel the open road.
The earth, that is sufficient,
I do not want the constellations any nearer,
I know they are very well where they are,
I know they suffice for those who belong to them.
(Still here I carry my old delicious burdens,
I carry them, men and women, I carry them with me wherever I go,
I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them,
I am fill’d with them, and I will fill them in return.)

Sometimes with one I love / Às vezes com quem eu amo
Sometimes with one I love, I fill myself with rage, for fear I effuse unreturn’d love;
But now I think there is no unreturn’d love — the pay is certain, one way or another;
(I loved a certain person ardently, and my love was not return’d;
Yet out of that, I have written these songs.)
Às vezes com que eu amo
fico com raiva e reclamo
pensando não ter retorno
o amor sem fim que entorno
No entanto sempre retorna
desta ou daquela forma
o amor que a gente derrama
quando é verdade que ama
Amei com paixão alguém
e perdi as ilusões
mas hoje esse amor revém
e dele é que faço canções

Uma vez atravessei uma cidade populosa / Once I passed through a populous city
Once I passed through a populous city
Once I passed through a populous city, imprinting on my brain, for future use, its shows, architecture, customs and traditions
But now of all that city I remember only the man who wandered with me there, for love of me.
Day by day, and night by night, we were together.
All else has long been forgotten by me — I remember, I say, only one rude and' ignorant man who, when I departed, long and long held me by the hand, with silent lips, sad and tremulous.
